How to interpret an IP lookup

An IP lookup helps confirm a public address, network provider, autonomous system number (ASN) and approximate region. The information comes from network registration and geolocation databases and can support connection troubleshooting, API access checks and network configuration reviews.

Public IP and local IP

A public IP is the network address visible to websites and online services. A local IP shown by a router or device is normally used only inside the current network. Proxies, corporate gateways and mobile networks can change the visible public address.

Location, provider and ASN

IP geolocation usually represents a registered or estimated network region, not a device's precise location. Provider and ASN records help identify the network that announces an address, but updates can be delayed.

Limits of risk indicators

Proxy, VPN and risk labels are signals based on third-party network intelligence and rules. They can assist investigation but cannot independently establish a person's identity, actual location or behavior.

IP lookup questions

Why does the result differ from my actual location?

IP databases often locate the network exit, provider or registered region rather than a device's GPS position. Mobile networks, corporate gateways and proxies can also change the displayed region.

Does an IP address stay the same?

Not always. Home broadband, mobile networks and cloud services may use dynamic addresses. Reconnecting or changing networks can result in a different public IP.

Can an IP lookup identify a person?

No. The result describes a network address and associated records; it cannot by itself confirm the identity of a person using that address.
